Studies show that a progressive evolutionary encephalization relative to body size occurs in vertebrates and culminates in humans. Equally important has been the evolutionary development of the human fore brain, which contains centers necessary for understanding and producing language, for conceptualization and abstraction, for judgment, and for capacity of human to contemplate and influence their lives.

The experts say, people aged 70 years or older who ate the calorie content between 2100 and 6000 calories per day had twice the risk of memory impairment, which could be early signs of dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

"The consumption of excess calories per day is not good for brain health," said lead researcher Dr. Yonas Geda, who is also professor of neurology and psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, Arizona United States.

"It may sound like a cliché, but we need to pay attention to the daily caloric intake. The point is eating in moderation, not in excess, for the sake of your brain health," he added.

In the study, researchers analyzed data on more than 1,200 respondents aged 70-89 years who lived in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Among these elderly people, 163 of whom had been diagnosed with memory loss known as "mild cognitive impairment."

Human Brain

The human brain, containing about 10 billion nerve cells, is notable the evolutionary increase in the size and complexity of the tow cerebral hemisphere of the fore brain, relative to other brain structures. The two hemispheres are connected by a band of fibers called the corpus callosum. The limbic system is associated with memory and emotion the cerebellum controls in voluntary body functions. The thalamus, hypothalamus, and pituitary gland are all parts of the fore brain. The brain stem includes the pons and medulla oblongata and connects the rest of the brain with the signal cord.

Nerve cell or neurons, are the most complex cells in the body. The cell's control this center are of two types, the shorter dendrites an the stalklike axon. Axons of the cells in the spinal cord that convey impulses to the feet may be up to 100 cm long, but in the brain an entire neuron is usually less than 0.1 cm long. Dendrites are the pathways for receiving impulses from other cells, whereas the axon is the pathway for the impulses transmitted by the cell seen here is sheathed in an insulating membrane called myelin. Such cell make up the so-called gray matter of the brain, as opposed to unmyelinated white matter. In sheathed axons, impulses travel from one node of Ranvier to the next (areas where the sheath is interrupted); in unsheathed axons, the impulses flow continuously. The mitochondria are the cell's energy sources. Chemical substances such as the neurotransmitters that carry message to other neurons are manufactured in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and carried along the axon by the smooth endoplasmic reticulum to the nerve ending, where they are package in vesicles for transmission. Such vesicles can contain more than one kind of neurotransmitter.

1. Grade 1, tissue benign cells look nearly like normal brain cells, they grow slowly.
2. Grade 2, at the malignant tissue, cells look less like normal cells than do the cells in a grade 1 tumor.
3. Grade 3, malignant tissue has cells look very different than the normal cells. The abnormal cells are actively growing (anaplastic).
4. Grade 4, malignant tissue has cells that look most abnormal and tend to grow quickly.

Brain Anatomy

Two major function of forebrain are diencephalons and telencephalon. Diencephalon contains structures such as thalamus and hypothalamus which are responsible for such functions such as motor control, relaying sensory information, and controlling autonomic functions. The telencephalon contains the largest part of the brain, the cerebral cortex. The actual information processing do in the brain takes place in the cerebral cortex.

Mid and the hindbrain together make up the brainstem. The midbrain is the portion of the brainstem that connects the hindbrain and the forebrain. This region of the brain is involved in auditory and visual responses as well as motor function. The hind brain extends from the spinal cord and is composed of the metencephalon and myelencephalon. The myelencephalon is composed of the medulla oblongata which is responsible for controlling such autonomic functions as breathing, heart rate, and digestion.

The fissure of Rolando is situated about the middle of the outer surface of the hemisphere, and coursing obliquely downward and forward, divides the surface of the hemisphere into approximately equal parts. It commences at or near the longitudinal fissure, a little behind its mid-point, and runs sinously downward and forward, to terminate a little above the horizontal limb of the fissure of Sylvius, and about half an inch of the same fissure. It forms two chief curves; the upper or superior genu in concave forward and upward, while the lower or inferior genu has its concavity directed backward.

The parieto occipital fissure is only seen to a slight extent on the outer surface of the hemisphere; being situated for the most part on its mesial aspect. The portion on the outer surface is called the external parieto pecipital fissure, to distinguish it from the part continued on to the internal surface, which is termed the internal parieto occipital fissure. The external parieto occipital fissure commences about midway between the posterior extremity or occipital pole of the brain and the fissure of Rolando, and runs downward and outward for about an inch.

These three fissure divide the external surface of the hemisphere into four lobes; the frontal, the parietal, the occipital, and the temporal. To this must be added:

1. the central lobe, or island of Reil, which is situated deeply in the Sylvian fissure
2. the olfactory lobe, which is found at the base of the brain and was formerly described under the name of the oflactory nerve.
